Fraction Pizza

We made Fraction Pizza. We measured 1/2 a cup and 1/2 a teaspoon. We cut the pineapple in 1/4's and we cut the salami in 1/8's.

Selena and Angela have 1/4 of the pizza each. There is 1/2 left.

Malcolm has 1/4 of the pizza. Tupou has 3/4's of the pizza.

The Chair Challenge

We had to roll up some paper to make chair legs. Rolling the paper made it stronger.

We worked together to make the chairs. Everyone had to help.

The legs were so strong that Candy could sit in the chair and it didn't even break.

Measuring

We are learning about measuring in maths. We read a story called The Jumping Contest. We made our own measuring tapes and then we had a throwing contest. We used our tapes to measure how far we threw the bean bag.

We cut strips of paper so they were the same length.

We made little flags and stapled them on each join.

We made our measuring tape 10 flags long. Then we used it to measure our throws.

Spring Open Day

We had a fabulous day on Monday. Lots of visitors came to see what we do at our school. They really enjoyed Kapahaka.
We made some spring flower arrangements. Some of us made sand saucers and some of us made gardens. We even made some beautiful daffodils and wrote a story about spring.
At lunchtime lots of people brought lunch to share. We had heaps of food from different cultures and our families stayed for lunch.
In the afternoon we had a special singing assembly to entertain our guests. We hope they enjoyed visiting us as much as we enjoyed being hosts.

We worked with our buddy class to design and make costumes. We heard some stories about Maori mythology and this is what we thought the gods might wear.

Tumataauenga is the god of war. He would have sharp teeth. He is holding a stick or a bone or a bomb. He looks tough. He would have ripped clothes. He would wear red and black with spiral patterns.

Tawhirimatea is the god of wind and storms. He is grey like the clouds. The swirls look like blowing. He would wear black for storms with lightening. He would have swirls like tornadoes on his cloak.

Rongo is the god of peace. He would wear a rainbow. He likes the sun and the rain and nature.

Celebrations

We had our own celebation. Rosie and Candy are back at school after being away for a long time so we decided to have a Welcome Back Party. We did all the planning. We made invitations, we decorated our room with banners and balloons, we organised games, we made party hats and we even baked a special "happy" cake. Our buddy class came to join in our celebration. We had lots of fun.

Festivals and Celebrations

We have been learning about festivals and celebrations. We know that we sometimes have special food on special occasions. We made a menu of food we have at parties. Some people didn't know about Fairy Bread so we made some.

First bread, then butter, then 100's and 1000's.

We cut the bread in half to make triangles.

We had to be careful to sprinkle the 100's and 1000's.

Everyone worked together and made their own Fairy Bread.

We had a day without power. It got very dark because it was a wet day. We used candles and torches so we could see. It was so dark we couldn't tell what colour our pencils were! We couldn't use the computers or the data projector. We had to write things down. We needed more clothes on to keep warm.

We made sailing boats because we are talking about wind power. You need a big sail because if you get a small one it wouldn't go fast because it is small. Small ones wouldn't go fast enough.

First we had to colour in the paper.

Then we had to cut into the middle. we couldn't go too far or the paper would be cut in half.

We put a pin through the corners of the paper and into a stick.

Some of our toys have power. Batteries give them power.

Selena and Camryn brought their zoozoo pets. They move and they talk. They have a little battery inside them. They have a switch to turn them on.

Shae brought her computer. It has batteries to make it go. It needs more than one battery.

Brendan showed us his remote control car. That needed batteries too. The batteries run out quickly. When they run out the car goes slower and stops.

Power

We brainstormed all our ideas about power. Here are our ideas.

Exercise and running make us powerful and strong.

Some toys have power. They move by themselves.

Some cars have batteries and a remote control.

Some toys have a string to pull.

Some toys need to be wound up.

The wind makes some toys move. Like a kite or a boat or Aydn’s helicopter.

Power lets us watch TV, turn on lights or play video games.

To get power you turn on a switch. There are wires and cords in your house.

Room 3 made some banners to cheer on the runners in the cross country race. We watched some races and then we wrote about them.

Lots of people were running at our school. They were hot. Tough! I said, "Come on!" There was one more race to run and we went back to class. It was fun. By Tupou

On Tuesday the Tawa Zone had a race at our school. Everyone was puffing. I shouted, "Go Hampton Hill." It was a long race. I said "Go, go, go!" and I said "great running." I waved my flag. I watched for a long time. It was a good race. By Emma

I thought cross country running would be cool. After I finished the race I felt relaxed. I think that I have got better at running.

Being a Scientist

We made some lava in a cup. We put some red water in a cup and poured some oil into it. The oil floated on the top. Rosie said that the oil was light so it floated. Shae said that the water was holding it up. We put some salt on the top.It sunk to the bottom then floated up. Brendan said it was the oil that was making the bubbles. Adyn said the salt disappeared, it dissolved into the water. Selena wondered what would happen if we stirred the water. The oil kept on going back to the top.
Scientists say that the salt is heavier than oil so it sinks to the bottom and takes some oil with it. The salt dissolves and the oil rises to the top again.

Today we wore our pyjamas to school. Some of us brought our favourite books and we had a lie down and some stories. We had a shared breakfast too. Some mums helped us cook toast and pancakes. Yummy!

We brought some of our books from home to swap for different ones. We went to the hall to choose a new book. When we got back to class we read our books and then we took them home. Thank you Rebecca, Olivia and Estelle. We had a great time choosing our books.

On Saturday me and Candy went to the shop. We had some lollies together. After lunch, Candy watched me painting my new rabbit hutch me and dad made. Ca ndy thought it was for him but it was for my rabbit called Spice. On Sunday I made me and Candy some breakfast. We had honey on toast, and some weetbix. We both finished our breakfast . In the afternoon we both sat down and watched Ratatouille, this was fun.
I really enjoyed my weekend with Candy, we had lots of fun and adventures together.

We have been learning to play tennis. Marcel is coming to teach us every Thursday for four weeks. We will practise our tennis skills at PE time and at playtime. It is a lot of fun.

Save Our Libraries!

The Duffy Books Group came to show us their play. They wanted to ask us if the play was any good and if they could improve it. We thought the play was funny. It told us we could get books from the library for free as long as we took them back in time.
